Hells in many lifetimes

In lifetimes without number we have wandered in many forms
Without focus on god slipping into hells
One without love for life is cut to pieces,
Without a relationship with god comes the punishment of the yama. 1

Friend - be devoted to the lord, be in love with the word (reflection)
whatever we do, we are not content
maya is like a cloud of smoke
people are not scared to do evil,
drunk with poison,
they slip
into hells in many lifetimes 2.

By raising the roof in self-centredness, evil rises onwards
the world is ruined by its greed and attachment
lust and fury dominate the mind
so much that people cannot utter the name even in sleep 3.

People are sometimes rich and powerful, sometimes beggars
the world is bound by pleasure and pain
people make no efforts to liberate their minds
and the bondage of sin ever increases 4.

Dear friend, no one else is our helper: people will eat what they sow
that which incited us to evil, o thoughtless one, you will leave it behind 5.

The person involved in attachment to creatures and creation
wanders around alot and in accordance with previous deeds
is placed in situations now
the real doer is the creator,
not bound by the law of good and evil 6.

lord of grace, save me!
you who are perfect in grace, i seek your shelter
other than you there is no place of shelter for us.
lord, in your grace give me the blessing of devotion to your name 7.

you are the real doer, ultimate source of all doings
all-high, without limit
in your grace attach me to your protection
god's servant, nanak, with the lord seeks shelter
