Sikhs hit by racist thugs

Sikh worshippers were subjected to a torrent of abuse from a gang of Asian thugs during a religious ceremony in a Bradford temple.

Now officials at the Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara Sikh temple off Leeds Road are calling on community leaders to prevent a repeat of the abuse.

The temple's general secretary Harbans Singh Khaira said the weekly 48-hour Akhand Path ceremony was interrupted at 4am on Saturday as a priest was reading from the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy book.

He said: "Someone started banging on the doors. The people went to answer and two men made obscene gestures and came out with a lot of swearing and anti-Sikh abuse. It was very frightening.''

The pair then left in a van with at least two other men - all of them described as Asian, in their 20s, tall and well built.

Mr Khaira said: "We want to appeal to community leaders to speak to the youngsters and ask them to stop. We want to live our lives peacefully and see everyone in this country respecting each other's religions.''
