Faiths unite in face of attacks on America

MORE than 100 people from nine different religious communities hosted a multi-faith service in memory of the thousands who died in last month's terrorist attacks in America.

The service, held at Trinity at Bowes Methodist Church, Palmers Green, was organised by Mrs Vijay Rattan, president of the Hindu Sindu Sabha organisation, and the Reverend David James.

Representatives from the Muslim, Greek Orthodox, Jewish, Roman Catholic, Hindu and Sikh faiths were joined by Enfield Mayor Yasmin Brett and MP Stephen Twigg.

Everyone who spoke to the congregation emphasised that the terrorist attacks were rejected by people of all faiths, and Rabbi Emmanuel Levy sent a powerful message of support.

At the end of the service the congregation lit candles in remembrance of the dead and carried them out of the church.

Mrs Rattan, who read a prayer during the service, said: "It was a very emotional evening and was a time to reflect on all the people who are suffering after the attack.

It was also a chance to pray for peace together. I would like to thank everybody who came along."

MrTwigg said: "This was a powerful event unifying and reflective. It brought people together to dedicate ourselves to the timeless principles of justice and humanity."
