Thousands gather in mountains to pray for peace

ESPANOLA, N.M. (AP)  About 3,500 people journeyed to a ranch in the Jemez Mountains in northern New Mexico for the 16th annual International Peace Prayer Day.

The event last weekend was organized by the Sikh Dharma of Espanola at a 235-acre ranch that can be reached by a 10-mile bumpy, dusty road deep in the mountains.

It's a day devoted toward prayers for peace and to bring as many diverse groups that are working toward peace together at one place at one time, said Gurudhan Singh, a Sikh member.

Jagat Joti Singh Khalsa said though the event is sponsored by the Sikhs, it is enjoyed by people of all faiths.

Your blood pumps the same as mine, this is a reminder we're all the same, he said.

Among the speakers was Yogi Bhajan, founder of International Peace Prayer Day, and Anita Roddick, founder of The Body Shop.
